History
Our History Curriculum
In history, children will progressively build up the knowledge and skills required to become confident and competent historians. Key knowledge is organised into the following core substantive concepts: power, achievements & errors of humankind, invasion, settlement & migration, civilisation & culture, trade, and belief. This is to help our children make connections in their learning and to ensure they have the readiness and ability to access what they are being taught at each stage.
We want our children to have a secure understanding of how historians work. Therefore, they will gradually develop their understanding of the following disciplinary concepts: change & continuity, cause & consequence, similarities & differences, historical significance, historical interpretation, and sources of evidence. Consequently, our children will become skilled historians who can capably carry out their own historical enquiries.
Our Intent
At Laurance Haines, we pledge to do the following for our children in History:
- Provide them with opportunities to be curious and explore significant events, people and time periods in Britain and around the world.
- Support them to develop the historical skills of enquiry, interpretation and chronological understanding.
- Allow them to investigate the impact that events, bodies of people or countries have had on the rest of the world.
- Develop their empathy for others, while providing an opportunity to learn from mankind’s past mistakes.
- Help them build confidence to think critically, to debate and pose questions which challenge the thinking of all, ultimately supporting a sense of belonging.
- Ensure that there is positive representation of various communities and events in history.
- Provide them with the knowhow to check the credibility of first- and second-hand sources.
