Geography
Our Geography Curriculum
In geography, children will progressively build up the knowledge and skills required to become confident and competent geographers. Key substantive knowledge is organised into the following strands: Locational knowledge, Place knowledge, Human and physical geography, and Geographical skills and fieldwork. Children will also progressively develop their understanding of the following geographical concepts: Place, Space, Scale, Interdependence, Physical and human processes, Environmental impact, Sustainable development, Cultural awareness and Cultural diversity. This is to help our children make connections in their learning and to ensure they have the readiness and ability to access what they are being taught at each stage. We want our children to have a secure understanding of how geographers work. Therefore, they will develop their disciplinary knowledge by participating in fieldwork. This will provide them with hands-on experiences that allow them to apply geographical concepts to their surroundings. Gradually, children will learn to question, observe, measure, record, and present. Consequently, our children will become skilled geographers who can capably carry out their own research with environmental awareness.
Our Intent
At Laurance Haines, we pledge to do the following for our children in geography:
- Allow them to discover geography from a local to a global level.
- Give them the chance to use maps, atlases, globes and digital media to explore the world around them, inspiring curiosity and fascination.
- Provide them with opportunities to participate in a variety of fieldwork activities and to observe and talk about the world us.
- Help them know and talk about geographical phenomena including volcanoes and earthquakes.
- Develop their understanding of human and physical features and processes, the relationship between them and how they impact people and environments.
- Equip them with an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and environments.
